Does All Beauty Lie in the Eye of the Beholder?

Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder.

Does All Beauty Lie in the Eye of the Beholder?

‘Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder’. That is an old saying since the age of Plato’s, and its main idea is that the concept of beauty may vary from person to person. It has the similar meaning as ‘One man’s meat is another man’s poison’, and is often used to persuade people to respect each other’s tastes. To many extents, it’s pretty true, however, the statement isn’t completely flawless, because the word ‘beauty’ is too pervasive. Though I do believe that external beauty lies in the eye of the beholder, I think the internal beauty, which means the beauty of human’s souls, is the one thing that every human being can appreciate.

According to the dictionary, beauty is the quality presented in a thing or person that gives intense pleasure or deep satisfaction to the mind. People can either feel the external beauty by their five senses or feel the internal beauty by their minds.

In terms of the external beauty, since every person has different life experience, they might have established unique links between certain things and the concept of beauty, and thus they would have different judgments. Say, for an archeologist, those broken pieces of artifacts and fossils that have been found under the ground might contain tons of beauty, but those stones might just be junk in the eye of others. So, considering the fact that people all have different perspectives, it’s fair enough to say that external beauty lies in the eye of the beholder.

However, speaking of the internal beauty, things would be different. To judge the beauty of one soul, we have to adopt a totally different stick yard than that of the external beauty, and that stick yard would be the humanity. According to Confucius’s theory, the nature of humanity is kindness. That is to say: The soul of beauty is a soul of kindness. And we can find that internal beauty doesn’t change from person to person. It is easy to apprehend: A soul with kind nature would never be considered as ugly, and vice versa, a soul with foul nature would never be considered as beautiful.

In conclusion, external beauty can be different in different people’s eye, but internal beauty is always a beauty to everyone’s eyes. So, instead of saying ‘Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder’, I prefer to say: ‘External beauty lies in the eye of the beholder, whereas internal beauty remains itself regardless of any beholder’
